Explore Antique Collection of Maharaja Ranjit Singh at Gobindgarh Fort Museum

Gobindgarh Fort is recognized as the very symbol of Punjab where history narrates its story in various ways. Apart from being a historical monument, the fort has a lot of fun activities to keep the guests entertained and enthralled throughout their visiting time.

Maharaja Ranjit Singh who once ruled the Fort was popularly known  for his bravery and courageous personality. The fort has stored the heroism of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and his warriors in every corner, and you can simply go astonished exploring it. Since the fort has become a tourist attraction and cultural hub, it lets the visitors catch a sight of the antiques of Maharaja, kept in the museums inside the fort. Toshakhana and Warfare museum are two spots inside the fort where you can have a look at the Antique collection that depicts Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s history.

Toshakhana

Did you know, it is here that the world-famous Kohinoor was housed? Though the original is not present currently, you can see its replica (as it used to be). It is said that no jeweller could or yet have been able to assess the price of the Kohinoor diamond. The fact that this famous diamond was  placed inside the Gobindgarh Fort before the Britishers took it away, makes people even more curious about this place. It is also said that Maharaja Ranjit Singh kept his treasure worth Rs. 30 Lakhs (sum of that time), precious jewels, and silver & copper coins in Toshakhana. For the security of his treasure, around 2000 soldiers were allotted as guards. You can still find the coins carved inside the walls in Toshakhana. It is extremely great to discover the royal treasury and get to know about the treasure secrets of the Maharaja inside the fort.

Warfare Museum

The warfare museum inside the fort was made to let people know about the brave warriors of Punjab. The museum showcases the wartime in Punjab through statues, instruments, and accessories. The museum has the replica of Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s sword as well as the attire he used to wear during wars. You can also find many accessories that the Maharaja used to carry during the time he ruled Gobindgarh Fort.

Apart from this, there is a specially crafted replica of the celebrated Bhangian di Tope (also known as The Zamzama). It was the largest cannon of its time that is 14.3 ft. big and is specially recreated for the viewing of visitors.
